Each month, Bare! brings together storytellers, comedians, sex educators and others to share true tales from their own experiences of sex, desire and romance. With stories as diverse as the people telling them, Bare! opens doors to bedrooms, back seats and dungeons to tell what your mama left out about the birds, bees and in-betweens.
This month, our chosen storytellers reveal the choices that have left them with terms of elation, regret or resignation:
Hosted by Jefferson (One Life Take Two, Spill!)
Derek Hills (SpeakeasyDC)
Diane Ivey (Mortified, Story League)
Kevin Phillips (The Encyclopedia Show)
Vijai Nathan (SpeakeasyDC)
. . . and more! You’ve made choices, good or bad, or had them made for you. Put your name in the hat for a chance to bare all on the Bare! stage.
. . . and still more! Everyone is eligible to win a sex-toy raffle courtesy of The Garden.
Jefferson is the curator and host of Bare! A sex educator and writer, Jefferson keeps a pseudonymous blog, One Life, Take Two, that details his life as a parent and pervert. He is a storyteller frequently seen on stages around the city and elsewhere, including The Moth, where he is a StorySlam winner. He is also host of the monthly series Spill! True Stories of Queer Sex, Desire and Romance.
Derek Hills is a storyteller and writer from Washington, DC. He is a regular on the SpeakeasyDC stage and was a part of its 2011 Halloween special, “Boo!” He has also performed in Vijai Nathan’s “Fan-Freaking-Tastic” variety show and with DC’s Story League. Other credits include “e-Geaux (beta)” from the 2011 Capital Fringe Festival and his work with the sketch-comedy group “Orbit Chef.”
Diane Ivey is a writer and storyteller. From a self-composed how-to guide on being an adventure heroine, to an obsessive college crush on the vaguely-Harrison-Ford-resembling editor of her college newspaper, to sundry forays into erotic historical fanfiction, Diane’s material comes from the tragic and hilarious place where fangirl obsession meets real life. Diane first performed in the January 2009 production of Mortified Chicago, reading her seventh-grade diary detailing her grandiose plans to write the next Gone With the Wind. She regularly performs with Story League in Washington, D.C.
Vijai Nathan has performed in South Africa, England and Canada, including turns at the Montreal International Comedy Festival (Just for Laughs) and the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival. Washington DC loves her too—she’s performed at the Smithsonian Museum, Kennedy Center, Constitution Hall, Library of Congress and won the award for Artistic Excellence from SpeakeasyDC. She’s gained attention from critics from her solo-shows “Woman on Top: Tips from Mom, Dad and COSMO” and “Good Girls Don’t, But Indian Girls Do.”
Kevin Phillips is a comedian and storyteller by night and an IT professional by morning and most of the afternoon. Hailing from quaint Spring Hill, Kansas, Kevin builds on his Midwest upbringing and endless fascination with yelling. Kevin can be seen performing across various venues all over the DC/Baltimore area. Kevin also co-produces the Encyclopedia Show DC at the Woolly Mammoth and likes to spend his free time sleeping upright.
